Vancouver (AFP) - Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic won the 3,000-meter women's speedskating gold on Sunday at the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games, four years after just missing a medal in the event.

Three-time reigning World Cup long distance champion Sablikova won in 4mins 2.53 secs while Germany's Stephanie Beckert took the silver, 2.09 seconds back with Canada's Kristina Groves capturing the bronze in 4:04.84.

"This is wonderful. I don't know what to say. I was so nervous," said Sablikova.

Park City (AFP) - Reigning Olympic champions Seth Wescott, Shaun White and Hannah Teter and season halfpipe star Kelly Clark were on the US Olympic snowboard roster announced late Monday.

Americans have dominated Olympic snowboarding since it debuted in 1998 at Nagano, Japan, and have expectations soaring as high as their competitors ahead of the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games.

"We are going in to the 2010 Games with one of the strongest athletic lineups possible," US Snowboarding coach Peter Foley said. "We're hoping to go into Vancouver and build on the successes we saw in 2006. This team is in position to do great things."

Whistler (AFP) - Swiss ski-jumper Simon Ammann won the first gold medal of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games on Saturday, and the third of his career, when he clinched victory in the normal hill.

Poland's Adam Malysz took silver with Austria's Gregor Schlierenzauer claiming bronze.

Ammann earned a two-jump total of 276.5 points with his second jump of 108m the longest of the day.

The 28-year-old Swiss also won gold in the normal and large hill competitions at Salt Lake City in 2002.

Malysz took silver with 269.5 points while Schlierenzauer, making his Olympic debut, secured bronze with 268.

Vancouver (AFP) - Lee Jung-Su won the men's 1,500m short-track speed skating gold at the Olympic Winter Games on Saturday, but powerhouse South Korea's hopes of a podium sweep were shattered on a last-bend collapse.

American Apolo Anton Ohno finished second to become the most decorated Olympic short-track skater with six medals from three Games.

Lee clocked 2min 17.611sec with Ohno 0.365sec behind while another American J.R. Celski finished third in 2:18.053 in the first event of the eight-race short-track competition.

Whistler (AFP) - Janne Ryynaenen was on track to give Finland its first medal at the Vancouver Games as he led the Nordic Combined ahead of American Todd Lodwick after the jump section Sunday.

Ryynaenen scored 135.5 points to 127.0 for Lodwick.

World Cup leader Jason Lamy-Chappuis was in the hunt in fifth on 124.5 points as participants battled with windy conditions at the Whistler Olympic Park.

Lamy-Chappuis now has to chase down a 46 second deficit on Ryynaenen in the afternoon 10 kilometre cross country section starting at 1:45 pm (2145 GMT).

Whereas Ryynaenen is not a cross country specialist, Lodwick is a double world champion from last year and stands just 34 seconds adrift after the jump.

It is with great regret that we confirm the death of the Georgian luge athlete, Nodar Kumaritashvili, during the final training session at the Whistler Sliding Centre, this morning.

Mr Kumaritashvili died after crashing on the last corner of the course during training. Doctors were unable to revive the athlete, who died in hospital.

“Our first thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the athlete. The whole Olympic Family is struck by this tragedy, which clearly casts a shadow over these Games”, said the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Jacques Rogge.

“We are deeply struck by this tragedy and join the IOC in extending our condolences to the family, friends and teammates of this athlete, who came to Vancouver to follow his Olympic dream”, said John Furlong, the CEO of VANOC, the Games Organising Committee.

For the International Luge Federation, President Josef Fendt said: “This is a terrible accident. This is the gravest thing that can happen in sport, and our thoughts and those of the ‘luge family’, are naturally with those touched by this event.”

An investigation is underway into the circumstances of the accident. Training was suspended and technical officials are now trying to establish the causes.

Vancouver (AFP) - Steve Yzerman doesn't need to be reminded what an arduous journey it is for the host country at an Olympic Games to try and win the hockey gold.

The Team Canada general manager is reminded of it every day since he's arrived in Vancouver for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

It has happened only twice before and both times by the Americans in Squaw Valley 1960 and Lake Placid 1980. Canada is trying to become the first host nation to win gold since that US Miracle On Ice victory.

"Our hopes are for gold as they are for several other countries," Yzerman said Saturday.

Vancouver (AFP) - America's Hannah Kearney won the women's moguls freestyle skiing gold Saturday, beating Canada's Jennifer Heil, who notched the host country's first medal of these Games, into second place.

Kearney, who was in top spot after qualifying, scored 26.63 points, with 2006 Olympic champion Heil scoring 25.69. Shannon Bahrke of the United States won the bronze with 25.43 points.

Kearney's win also extended Canada's long wait to win Olympic gold on home ground with the hosts having failed to do so at the 1976 Montreal Summer Games as well as the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary.

Vancouver (AFP) - French pairs skaters Yannick Bonheur and Vanessa James are set to create history on Sunday when they become the first black couple to compete in figure skating at the Olympic Games.

Getting to Vancouver has been a long journey for the duo who teamed up just over two years ago after Bonheur put an advert on the internet after splitting with previous partner Marylin Pla.

Canadian-born James' aunt saw it and convinced her niece, who has lived in England since she was a child, to reply.

James, 22, arrived in France for a trial run and never left with the duo teaming up in December 2007.

Banff (AFP) - Canadian cross-country skier Brian McKeever was chosen for the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games, making him the first winter sports athlete to compete in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

McKeever has won seven Paralympic medals, including four gold.

McKeever suffers from Stargardt's disease which has left him with impaired sight. His brother Robin acts as his guide.

Lake Placid (AFP) - American bobsledder Todd Hays, a 2002 Olympic silver medalist who had been seeking a bid to his fourth Olympics, has been forced to retire, the US Bobsled Federation announced.

Hays was diagnosed with an intraparenchymal hematoma following a CT scan after a training crash last Wednesday in Winterberg, Germany. An MRI confirmed that Hays risks brain damage if he continues bobsledding.

"In discussion with various experts in the field of sports-induced injuries, it was the consensus that Todd should not engage in any further bobsledding to avoid any additional trauma to a healing brain which may cause irreversible damage," team doctor Eugene Byrne said.

Whistler (AFP) - Germany's Maria Riesch believes the hype surrounding Lindsey Vonn's shin injury will not hinder the American's drive for Olympic glory, indicating Thursday she herself believed her rival will ski through the pain barrier.

"I've had a similar injury and I know how uncomfortable and painful it can be - but I don't think it will hold her back that much," said Riesch.

"When you are going hell for leather down the hill you put the pain aside. It hurts, sure. But it goes. Take a painkiller," shrugged slalom world champion Riesch, whose close friendship with Vonn is well documented.
